What’s the benefit of a regular IT support contract?

IT support is like having an insurance policy. It provides you with the peace of mind that if you need it, help it is only a phone call or click away. At Teckno Solutions we offer convenient monthly cover which offers cost savings in the long term. Ad-hoc call-outs to tend to problems generally command higher rates, but on a monthly support contract, not only do you pay less, your call will always take priority.

Why should I have fibre optic cabling installed?

Fibre optic cabling provides businesses with super-fast network infrastructure. Many businesses now use cloud-based services such as hosted desktops and VoIP telecoms which offer a range of benefits. These rely wholly on an internet connection, so it needs to be highly reliable, and this can be achieved via fibre optic. It’s the ultimate pairing of technology. Fibre optic networks also offer super-fast connectivity, allowing you to transfer large quantities of data between multiple sites, safely and securely.

Why do I need anti-virus software?

Viruses are becoming more and more sophisticated, and increasingly devious – and dangerous. There are several ways a virus can infect your computer:

  • By opening infected email attachments such as .exe files
  • By opening infected files from web-based digital file delivery
  • Through visiting corrupt websites
  • Via macros in application documents (word processing, spreadsheets, etc.)
  • Through USB connected devices (e.g. memory sticks, external hard drives, MP3 players, etc.)
  • Through CDs or DVDs

The dangers of viruses are many. Once a virus hits your system it can:

  • Steal identity, such as bank information, contacts and email addresses
  • Access, corrupt or delete data
  • Slow computers down or make them unusable altogether

Why should I keep my anti-virus software up to date?

It is vital to keep your antivirus software up to date in order to provide the most complete protection. Thousands of new viruses are detected every year, to say nothing of the variants of new and existing ones. Each has a set of characteristics or ‘signatures’ that enable antivirus software manufacturers to detect them and produce suitable updates. Regular updates are vital to the protection of your system as new viruses are discovered on a regular basis.

Why do I need to upgrade Microsoft Office?

If you are currently using a version of Microsoft Office that is no longer supported, you could be putting your system, and your data, at risk.

Once support stops, so do the security patches, opening up your computers to serious vulnerabilities such as data loss and malicious attack. There will be no more bug fixes or performance issue updates either, meaning you will be open to glitches and compatibility issues.

Whilst good anti-virus software will be able to pick up a few of the possible exploits for outdated software, the fact is some of them will get through. This is why it is crucial that as soon as support ceases for your version of Microsoft Office, you MUST upgrade.

My computer is running slow, what is the problem?

There could be a number of reasons why your computer is running slow. The most obvious are the age of your PC, and the speed of your internet connection.

Over time computers become ‘clogged up’ with all sorts, not just the files and data stored on them, but things like temp files that are created in the background, and ‘deleted’ files that are stored in the recycle bin. All of this puts a strain on the computer and slows it down.

‘Widgets’ – applications that deliver information such as the weather – can drain your PC’s speed, as can other programmes you may have running in the background, often unbeknown to you. A busy desktop laden with a multitude of shortcuts and photos will slow down your PC on start-up.

And finally, you may have a virus or malware that is affecting the way your PC runs.

There is a lot that can contribute towards a slow computer. Start by deleting temp files, emptying your recycle bin, ditching widgets and trimming back your desktop shortcuts. If there is still no difference, speak to an IT expert!
